ACME Supermarkets to be Sold
The sale includes the Acme in Newtown Township, as well as 107 other Acme stores.
Acme grocery stores will be sold, parent company Supervalu announced Thursday. The sale includes the Acme in Newtown Township, as well as 107 other Acme stores, NBC10 reported.
According to a press release, Supervalu has reached an agreement to sell Acme, along with four other supermarket chains it owns, to AB Acquisition. The total sale is for 877 stores.
The $3.3 billion transaction also includes the following supermarket chains: Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s and Star Market.
A report posted on Phillyburbs.com stated the transaction does not presently involve the closing of Acme stores.
In September, Acme announced it was closing about 60 stores, including the Acme on West Trenton Road in Falls Township.

Ceberus, who is taking over ACME, is a liquidator, run mostly by sleezy lawyers for their own selfish values. They will auction the leases and close all stores. Acme will disappear just like Genuardi's.

Would someone like to explain the community politics to us so we citizens can understand why the Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, or Wegman's cannot happen. If the community knew local dynamics involved we can try individually to effect change!! I'm willing to volunteer myself for some action, if necessary!

The other supermarkets don't want them. Whole Foods was interested in moving into the Genaurdi's space, but Giant bought it and would not sell to Whole Foods. Then the community complained to the FTC because most people didn't want another Giant so close to the one on 332. Giant sold to McCaffery’s at that point. Whole Foods would like to come here, but will need to build from the ground up to do so. As we all know, the zoning around here is tough to get through, so it's a battle for them. They do want to come to Bucks County, but it may not be in Newtown, unfortunately.

Wegmans needs a lot of space to open the new store. they usally don't go in to the existing space. Whole foods was interested in the old genuardis space, maybe they will be interested in acme.

Not enough space for Wegmans. The one in NJ is closer and you can also hit Traders Joes while there and they sell wine. We deffinately need a TJ's here in Newtown.

Wegman's - space is too small (and Wegman's in NJ off of rt.1 and Quakebridge - you can stop by Trader Joe's, make a U turn head south on rt. 1, stop off at Whole Foods, before your Wegman's visit)
Trader Joe's - no interest in Newtown according to several commercial real estate brokers. They already know where they want to open stores, and Newtown is not on the list.
Whole Foods - would be best option. Can anyone explain why they were turned down in prior attempt.

Hey Kara or somoeone thats been follwing the story over the past year- Didn't McCaffreys secure some sort of FTC concession that limits the type of market competion allowed in the Acme space?

@darlene ~ I'm sure nobody would want to see any of the people unemployed, just stating that if it did close what would be nice to have there.

I'm happy we do not have a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods and if we had to choose a real supper market I think Wegman's would be nice, but fortunately Acme is here to stay.
