BCCC To Host LGBT Prom
The event is open to both gay and heterosexual couples throughout the community.
The prom is a quintessential moment in the life of most teenagers. You get dressed up, buy a corsage and maybe even pick up your date in a limo.
But some same-sex teen couples don’t have a chance to experience the prom in high school. So members of Bucks County Community College’s Open Door Club are giving them an opportunity to celebrate prom in a way they are comfortable.
The Open Door Club is hosting its annual LGBT Prom on Friday, April 13 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the college’s Gallagher Room.
The LGBT (stands for Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) Prom is open to the public. All BCCC students are invited to attend, as well as high school students and members of the public. Both gay and heterosexual couples are welcomed to attend.
Open Door Club Vice President Tim Schumann said the club hosts the prom so that those who were unable to attend their high school prom because they wanted to bring a same-sex date would have a chance to experience the event.
This is the second year the LGBT Prom will be held at the Newtown Campus. Schumann said the club held the event once before at the Upper Bucks Campus.
“Last year we had close to 80 people come,” he said. “We’re hoping to double that number this year."
The theme of the event is "Classic Hollywood," Schumann said. But attendees can dress however they feel most comfortable. “Formal or casual -- you can come in any clothing,” he added.
The event will feature food prepared by culinary arts students, music and a professional photographer.
There will also be an open gender king and queen competition. Attendees will vote and at the end of the evening, the ballots will be tallied and a king and queen will be crowned.
Part of the proceeds from the evening will go towards the Rainbow Room in Doylestown, a support center geared towards LGBT youth.
Tickets to the event are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. The ticket price includes food, Schumann said. There is no ATM on campus so those buying tickets at the door should bring cash.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Student Life Office in the Rollins Building on the Newtown Campus.
For more information, visit the event page on Facebook.

Clubs like these hold fundraisers and ask for donations in order to hold these events, so rest assured "your" tax dollars aren't being squandered on $20 worth of gay prom decorations.

I don't believe this event is using school money, hence the $15 fee to get in.

This event can be sponsored by the gay community...it does not belong in a taxpayer subsidized community college.

Why is it we heterosexual's don't have special events that exclude the gays? Wouldn't they be up arms and all in a flutter. This event is a mockery of all that is good and wholesome. God have mercy

Heterosexuals are welcome at this prom. And actually, PLENTY of gay people are excluded from their own prom by not being able to bring who they want or dress how they feel comfortable. As far as I can tell Nadia, gay people pay taxes too, so why shouldn't an event thrown, funded, and attended by gay and straight people be allowed at a public community college? Thank GOD the WONDERFUL people at the BCCC are not as narrow minded and hateful as you!

Molly is right. Attending the Prom is a right that every person has regardless of attire or date. Many individuals in the LGBT community are unable to attend their proms as themselves for fear of humiliation and intimidation. We offer our Alternative Prom as a solution. Anyone of Any Age from Everywhere are welcome to come celebrate with us and make it a great night!

And how exactly would you know? Plenty of gay people are excluded from their proms or feel too uncomfortable to go because of closed-minded ignorant jerks like you.

They are excluded from bringing a date of the same sex so its just like being excluded themselves. If a straight person can bring their opposite sex partner and gay person should be able to bring their same sex partner.

You are actually EXTREMELY wrong. At my own high school prom it said "MALE DATE" and "FEMALE DATE" and when a friend asked what they should do if their date was the same sex she was told that it wasn't allowed.
Please join the 21st century and stop being a closed minded jerk. Thanks.

I notice lesbians, like Molly, generally become hostile when they are confronted by folks who have opposing views. I guess lesbians are allowed to have their views, and hetersexuals need to be quiet ?

Actually, I'm a heterosexual and I think you're being a complete jerk also. It clearly states that this prom is open to EVERYONE. That's the point of it. It's there so that anyone and everyone can get together and have a good time. Who are you to judge people you've never met? I met a gay man once who was extremely rude to me, but does that mean that ALL gay men are rude? Absolutely not. You don't have an opposing view, you just want to argue for the sake of arguing. This prom isn't hurting anyone, it isn't taking anyone's money, and it's not excluding others, so why do you STILL feel the need to complain? We live in a society where it's normal to see a gay couple walking down the street, yet some people are still uncomfortable by it, which is okay, but it's not okay to be mean to them simply because they're having a prom because many schools won't let them go together. In fact, a friend of mine took another friend, and his friend took his boyfriend so they could both go, and when they were seen dancing together a teacher yelled at them. You seem just as rude as that teacher. Grow up.

Nadia, if you are so worried about your tax dollars going to this, then are you also against your tax dollars going towards all the religiously affiliated groups at BCCC as well? If you feel a LGBT friendly prom isn't welcome at a public institution, then neither are the religious clubs if this is the track you are on. Judging by your beliefs, you are probably a very religious person with you just vomiting all the conservative morals that you have been force-fed throughout your life. So when your tax dollars (that subsidize our tuition which funds student organizations) stop going to the Open Door Club, they'll stop going to all the religiously affiliated groups as well.

I don't think sexuality has anything to do with the statements I made but for the record, I'm heterosexual. I don't understand why you would come to the conclusion that I am a lesbian. I made the statements I made because unlike you, I am not ignorant or close-minded to the views of others. I am a very confident person and very secure with who I am in all aspects. If anything, I think you are the unconfident one in this situation because you are taking out your insecurities and fear of the LGBT community on other people.

Kathleen and Nadia, None of your tax dollars were spent on this event so don't worry about it. But Nadia, my tax dollars seem t be subsidizing your life and maybe I don't agree with everything you stand for so please give back your social security because I don't want my tax dollars subsidizing homophobia. And no I am definitely not a lesbian. Why are you so hateful? Haven't you had any love in your life? Kathleen the same for you if you are over 62.

I'm proud to be a BCCC student and give my total support for this wonderful event! I never had the chance to go to my prom in 1988 for fear of hateful bigots. So in this, the year of our Lord 2012, I will be attending this prom as the gay woman the Lord has made me to be! Kiss that homophobes!

Nadia. Your initial complaint has been disproved here several times. It's NOT your money being used. So then you move on to show that you're simply prejudiced and ignorant to the hurdles homosexuals and lesbians face. You'd think someone was forcing you to attend. I feel sorry for you.

I think Nadia has something in her closet. Most hateful people do and they suffer from low self-esteem. I think a part of it stems from, perhaps being named after a fantasy movie? Maybe she was rejected from a fantasy lover? That could be very traumatizing for her. Listen poor dear, we are all here for you. There is help out there for you to help cope with your obvious fears and self hatred. :) Good luck sweetie!

I am a married mother of 2 boys and in today's day and age where gays/lesbians are picked on or bullied or "secretly videotaped" and then posted on the web I find it refreshing to know that there are people/groups or even buildings that are not gender bias and don't care who or what you are! I want my kids to grow up in a world that knows no hate for who you are or who you love. We are all GODS children no matter what. People with negative minds make this world an ugly place. Treat people how you would want to be treated...that's what I tell my boys.
I hope you all have a wonderful time and way to go BCCC for doing what is right!

my little sister is gay. and im happy to see that she and her girlfriend will have a place to go where there will be no judging or hostile environment. Thank you BCCC for this open door. it frightens me everyday that she might come home one day all beaten up by ignorant little brats that think they are better then her. She struggles everyday with depression and her being gay weighs in because of the comments and troubles from the kids in her school. Being Gay or straight is not a choice. Many people live as a "straight" person because they know they cant handle the pressure of being "gay". People need to accept that we all are the same...we are human. And i feel that there is a need for a function like this because it provides safety and self esteem boosts to many kids!
