Best of Newtown: Family-Friendly Restaurant

What's the best family-friendly restaurant in Newtown?

It's easy to pick a restaurant when you're going out for an adults-only meal. There are no worries about fussy babies, roudy toddlers or picky eaters.

But when you bring the entire family, a whole new set of considerations -- like booster seats and kids menus -- come into play.

Where is the best place in town to take the kids out for dinner? That's what we want to know in this week's Best Of Newtown poll.

The choices are: Applebee's, Chick-fil-A, Isaac Newton's, Green ParrotFriends and Jake's Eatery. If your favorite place to bring the family isn't on our list, please add it in the comments and tell us what makes it the most kid-friendly place in town.

Voting closes at 9 a.m. Friday and the winning restaurant will be featured later that day.

Newtown has alot of high end restaurants and bars, but not many restaurants that you can go to repeatedly and get a variety of food...we need a diner!

What about Jake's Eatery! It is a nice place where adults can get a good meal and kids can still get a grilled cheese if they like! Also, you can BYOB!

Barbara is 100% correct - we need a diner. Goodnoe's, the Restaurant, was the closest thing we had to one but nothing has come along to fill that niche since they closed up. Jake's is OK and sort of in that vein, but they have some weird stuff on their dinner menu that seems to be a distraction for the kitchen.

Sorry, Sid - Jules sucks. Overpriced mediocrity.

Hank, what weird stuff on Jake's menu? A distraction for the kitchen? What does that mean? I go there a lot and love it! Good food, good service and good people. It is just the kind of place Newtown needed.

Eating at Jakes in the evening is not an experience I want to go thru again. The owner needs to pop in and see how the food is being prepared, and how the staff acts. If they would replaced the cook / kitchen staff who works after 4, they may be able to salvage their evening customers.

Sandy are you kidding? Jakes was one of the few restaurants that had power and stayed open to feed those that had no ability to cook at home! It was an emergebcy situation. The employees were working extremely long and hard to keep up with the demand and serve our community. I waited longer than normal for my food but this was NOT NORMAL. I was just grateful to have a place to eat! I think it is unfair and unwarranted to decide to evaluate this restaurant during an extreme natural disaster.

If your complaint is about a visit prior to the Hurricane Sandy, then you should have spoken to the owner for a resolution before you blast them online. If you did and you weren't satisfied, then blast away. But I don't think you did. So go back to bed, get up on the right side of it and put yourself in the shoes of these exhausted hard working people. They deserve a thank you!

I love Isaac's. I'd go there for the big booths alone. Nothing like being able to spread out and not being smushed by all the "stuff" you have when you have kids. They're also really fast to serve the food, which makes sure that a fun night out stays fun, and doesn't end in a meltdown.

Sycamore grill is family friendly and has quality food. We have been there 5 times since it opened and always had good service and meals.

Jakes is a nice place. I've been going to their Richboro location for years and am happy they opened in Newtown since I live in between them both. Im not sure what the above comment even means about their dinner menu, I think its different than anywhere else and Delicious! I guess if you are not willing to try new things than most restaurants menues scare you. Issacs is also very good. And I agree the booths are awesome!

Note the Green Parrot is dead last. I have to say GP is my greatest disappointment in Newtown in terms of menu and food quality. It could have been so much more. If you're watching this poll GP, may I suggest hiring an up and coming gastro-pub chef (from a place like the Standard Tap in Philly) for a complete make-over.

Ahhh- the Standard Tap! A great place... Or Monk's/ The Belgium Cafe- there is nothing quite like their mussels and pomme frites!! Newtown could really use a place like this. Or a great wine bar like Tria!! But I guess these places don't necesairly qualify as "family restaurants."

MR, I have to think it's possible that a family restaurant could serve exceptional food. Standard Tap has a phenomenal burger, after all. I went to the Green Parrot one time and ordered the Stromboli special. They served it with guacamole! Who does that?

It's definitely possible, but it doesn't happen that often. Anyway, I agree that the GP is a mess and I was also agreeing that the Standard Tap has great food...

yeah man! Jake's is pretty great. I take my family there when they come from out of town and the prices are amazing for all that food. Pat's Colonial Kitchen is another of our family favorites. I will never forget when they mustered up a cake for me on my birthday.

I would have to say that Jake's Eatery is by far the best family resturant in town. The food is always made fresh and they always have Great dinner specials on the weekends. I take my nephews out with me when I have them, they are 4 and 1, and I think the staff is so nice and accomodating to them and me. Plus, the prices for the amount of food you get can't be beat.

Sandy - I am one of the owner's of Jake's. Please let us know of your experience. Steve Jacobs, the main owner is there every day and mostly every night. He does leave from time to time to shower and get a few hours of sleep. This past week he literally worked 24 hours a day to prepare food for the "powerless" people of the area. I am sorry if you had a bad experience, but we need to know exactly what it was if we are to correct it. Please email us: steve@jakeseatery.com

Carol, I was very thrilled to have discoved Jakes, and the lunches I ordered (cheesesteaks) were to die for. I left you a fantastic review, plus I requested you be entered into the best " cheesesteak in Newtown" that the patch was surveying.
But then about 2 months ago, we ordered cheesesteaks in the evening, I ordered one with everything, (then was asked, whats that) I told her, mushrooms cheese, onions peppers. To my knowledge, thats everything normally. I get home and it has lettuce tomatos, in other words it was a hoagie. Ok I was disappointed because lunch time knew what everything on it was. Then my son and I ate dinner there about a month ago, well, the noise from the kitchen was annoying, I felt like i was in a Jr. high cafeteria. I will stick to only lunch time orders in the future, but thank you for inquiring. I did try to write to you several times by my computer doesn't let me send you mail from the email you posted. ( Its my computer) Thanks again. Sandy
