Borough to Distribute 'Pace Car' Magnets to All Residents

All borough residents will receive one car magnet reminding others to drive safely. Additional magnets can be purchased for $1.

Newtown Borough officials hope residents will set an example when it comes to safe driving around town. To help remind them of the importance, the borough is sending all residents a magnet this week that reads “Be the Pace Car for Safety.”

Borough Council, with the help of the borough’s Traffic and Parking Management Committee, is in the midst of a multi-step approach to promote traffic safety around town. One component to the plan is encouraging residents to “be the pace car.”

“We are asking all of our residents to set the example for others driving through our town by observing the speed limit,” said a letter sent from the borough to residents in June. “In short, we want all of our residents to be pace cars for safety as they drive."

Other components to the program include the repainting of pedestrian walkways and increased traffic monitoring by police.

“There have been numerous comments to Council concerning the effectiveness of the program to date,” said a letter from the borough that will be distributed along with the magnets to all residents. “To continue in that effort we ask you to place the enclosed magnet on your car as a visible sign of our community’s efforts to preserve the character of the place we call home.”

Each resident will receive the magnet for free. Additional magnets can be purchased for $1 at Borough Hall or the First National Bank of Newtown.

These are not actually "free". Who is paying for them? The Borough, with tax dollars?

I think this is a waste of money! I bet you more people are just going to throw them out rather than put it on their car. They should concentrate on more police coverage, better signs and walkways.

Both Hank and Krby are right...it's a waste of money and won't be effective. Get the police onto the streets...walking and on bikes...so they can see how many people blow stop signs. I'd rather see a survey of residents...do it online so it's free...of where they see speeding and running stop signs. Then the police can target those areas.

actually, proposed and passed by a Republican Council, purchased largely by a private donation, hand delivered, not mailed to save money. The extras for $1, will also offset the expense. The total cost is less than one police officer for one day on the job...
