Celebrate National Ice Cream Day on Sunday

Two local shops are offering specials on frozen treats.

Sweet! Sunday is National Ice Cream Day.

Two Newtown-area ice cream shops - Sweet Pea and OWowCow -  are offering specials in honor of the important holiday.

Sweet Pea, on Sycamore Street in Newtown, will be running a $1 vanilla cone special throughout the day.

OWowCow, located in Carousel Village in Wrightstown, is offering tastes of their three vanilla ice creams. Also, Newtown and Wrightstown residents can receive a free mini-cone on Sunday.

The organic ice shop isn’t just celebrating National Ice Cream, but their one year anniversary at their Wrightstown spot. The store has been running specials all week.

The Temperance House resturant will be giving customers a complimentary ice cream with entree purchases, according to a Facebook post.

Ice cream has its origins in the time of the Roman Empire and Chinese dynasties. During that time, workers would bring ice down from the tops of mountains and add milk and fresh fruit.

In 1776, the first ice cream parlor came to America and from there the rest is history.

According to a recent National Geographic report, Americans spend close to $20 million every year on ice cream and similar frozen treats.

If you don’t feel like going out, here are some homemade ice cream recipes:

Vanilla
Chocolate
Strawberry
Chocolate Chip
Pecan & Maple Syrup
Banana
Butter Pecan
Honey
Mint Choc Chip
