Cosi at Goodnoe's Corner Closes Abruptly
A sign on the door at Cosi says the cafe has closed for good.
If a cup of coffee or sandwich from Cosi is part of your daily routine, you may need to adjust your plans Monday.
Cosi at Goodnoe's Corner closed abruptly over the weekend. The Pheasant Run location is still in business.
A sign on the door reads: "Cosi Goodnoe's is closed but our other hearths are still burning. Visit us on the corner of Pheasant Run and Terry Drive (at the clock). Thank you for your years of support."
According to sources, the cafe was open Saturday. As of Sunday, the doors were locked and the restaurant was closed.
Furniture and wall menus were still in place Sunday afternoon. There was no activity in the restaurant, however, and the lights were off.
Cosi's website, www.getcosi.com, no longer includes the Goodnoe's Corner location on its list of restaurants.
US Realty Associates, an area real estate firm that specializes in leasing commercial properties, has a posting for the space on its website. According to a brochure, the firm is seeking a new tenant for the 3,000 square foot space.

Apparently, the employees were given virtually no notice. Heard that the rent was raised prohibitively high. Any truth to this? And if so, does that mean there will be more closings in that strip?

Yes that is true. I myself was a former employee

Its a shame. Cosi and Jules made a good combination.

I wonder if this is a bad omen for that shopping center. Rent is probably high, and parking can be a mess. It's hard to justify operating a business when your costs are high and it's a pain for customers even to get to your front door. I think that "village-style" design that all the residents want is not a very efficient use of space, so parking is sacrificed.

If they really did run the rent up and drive them out that was a big mistake. Cosi was a favorite for me and the family.

Wonder if it has anything to do with Corner Bakery Cafe moving in, which has similar fare....

All good questions -- I've reached out to Cosi and will update the story when I hear back. At least I can still get my tomato soup fix at the other location, but I have to say the Goodnoe's Corner spot has a much better ambiance.

You think? I found the GC spot kind of skeevy. The employees were always standing out front smoking.

Having two locations so close seemed silly anyway.

I am friends with the owner of the GC and Pheasant Run locations. He's the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. It's a shame this location didn't work out but he tried his hardest. I know the rent is VERY high.

I agree the two locations was silly. @dolores, yes the employee smoking thing is annoying. Green Parrot staff smoke a lot in the back, too which is unappealing. But I found the GC location to be brighter. Plus, whenever I go to the one in the business commons, it seems some sort of Celine Dion wannabe music is blaring, which gets irritating.

So true Kara - the music is awful.

No need to hold out, Gerry - there is a diner in Newtown, and it's a good one, too. Jake's right across from the Dunkin Donuts (by the 7-11). http://www.jakeseatery.com/

Hello all,my name is Dave and I was the general manager of the location from day 1 till the end :(. I would like to extend my personal thanks to everyone for their years of patronage to our little "home". Where all may not have been perfect all the time, we always strived to be the best we could be. I think I can speak for my entire crew when we all say thank you. I would hope that everyone would keep Cosi in their daily menus and visit our pheasant run location now. Hopefully we will see everyone there. Thank you again for your years of loyalty!

As an employee of the Cosi Goodnoe's location I have to say I am saddened by the recent turn of events. Dave Hogan and Josh were too very good managers to work for. I enjoyed my tenure at this location and enjoyed each and everyone of the employees that I worked with. We were like a "family". This atmosphere was due in part to Dave and Josh's management style. Good Luck to all of the staff of the now closed Goodnoes' Cosi. Who will feed momma goose?

It's a complete shame that Newtown in general is losing so many small businesses. High rent for what? It's ridiculous. The town is slipping badly, and certainly isn't the place I moved to 13 years ago.

Dave, are you moving to the other Newtown Cosi location? Are any of the other emlpoyees finding work at other Cosi's? I always thought everyone was friendly and attentive at GC Cosi. I'll miss it. Good luck to you all. Still curious to hear about the rent issue and whether that was the reason... and whether we'll be seeing more businesses closing abruptly.

I unfortunately will not be moving there. My right hand man josh is there now, but that doesn't mean a return trip if needed. Our franchise needed help elsewhere and I'm always ready to go help whenever needed. There is hope that some of my people will be there. I don't know their staff situation now, but have people ready to help. Again thanks for the positive comments about the location and staff. We always quickly hear the negative but rarely hear the positive. I'm sure that the other location will keep up the Cosi tradition the same way we held it

While the buildings are nice looking buildings, the parking situation is terrible and it looks run down behind the green parrot...The planning and zoning regulations required a specific number of parking spaces based on the size of this project, and those requirements were waived by our planning boards in order to squeeze this project in..and does anybody actually use that bank??? it always seems empty.

It is definitely a problem for the future as everyone continues to count street parking as being available to make up for the shortfall in their own design plans...the developers aren't stupid...force the plan through now...and in 5 years when everyone is complaining about lack of parking, the town will be forced to deal with it via a parking garage at taxpayer expense..

I miss the howl and the business relationships that I have developed through eating at the store. I will never forget the wilderness personality of some of the employees helping and scraping through the busy times of the weekend. It was like they must have been born for the rush!! The flame is out, but yet my heart burns for a piece of heaven. Hell will not trap my soul..... Bring back the corner of delight!!!
