Former Rouget Still Vacant

Rouget closed in July 2011 but the Sycamore Street building remains vacant.

Rouget, an upscale French restaurant, closed nearly two years ago. And yet the Victorian-style building that housed the fine dining location is still vacant.

The buiding is located on Sycamore Street in the same parking area as Rita's.

In July 2011, Rouget owner Brian Held told the Newtown Advance he was closing because economic conditions had impacted his business. He has since opened Brian's in Lambertville.

What do you think should come to the former Rouget location?

Trader Joe's!! (Just kidding, I just wanted to be the first to post that inevitable request). I've lived around here my whole life, I can't believe I've survived this long without a Trader Joe's, Whole Foods or Wegmans in Newtown....lol!
Seriously, a home decor place? The rooms would be perfect displays for merchandise..

Perhaps if Newtown didn't have such high rent and prohibitive zoning ordinances, more business would come here. Instead they go to places like Bensalem, Warrington and Doylestown. No one to blame but ourselves.

The guy who rents out the whole shopping center from Wendy's to mcaffreys doesn't budge on rent. He doesn't need the money. That's why we have so many vacancies. La stalls's rent is somewhere near or above 30,000 dollars a month. These businesses could offer competitive prices if they could just get a break. We also might still have my favorite bagel shop!

Kara, great stuff. Questions: is it zoned for more than a restaurant? What is the rent? How many spots for parking? Can we have the landloard weigh in here on comments and maybe moderate these great suggestions so at the end of these exercises there is an action plan that is realistic? Again, terrific stuff here (and Borough discussion 2 weeks ago as well!).

I'm sick of hearing about Trader Joes or Wegmans. We've all survived having the "average" grocery stores here. Get over it.

because we have to drive to Jenkintown or Warrington. Why not to have one closer to us?

I inquired about that space years ago (just thought it would be a good spot for my bike shop) and was surprised that rent was $8000.00 per month then, don't know what it is now.

What's the point of discussing it all here again and again if landlords are not willing to lower the price?
