Newtown Getting Ready For First Fourth Celebration

A food drive has been added to Saturday's festivities, which also include a parade, party, entertainment and, of course, fireworks.

First Fourth in Newtown is right around the corner, and organizers announced this week that a food drive has been added to the lineup of events, which also include a parade, fireworks, and party.

The celebration is this Saturday, July 2.

The parade starts at 3 p.m. near Old St. Andrew’s Church and will go down Sycamore Street to the Green Parrot.

Advocates for Homeless and Those in Need will be collecting non-perishable food items during Newtown's First Fourth parade.  The organization’s transportation vehicle -- known as Delilah -- will be there for the collection. AHTN is an interfaith organization of community volunteers that serves Lower Bucks County’s less fortunate, especially its homeless.

After the parade, the festivities will continue at Newtown Middle School, where a block party will begin at 4 p.m. The party will feature a disc jockey and . Best Darned Kettle Corn, Drinks and More, and a barbecue vendor will provide refreshments. A township versus borough softball game begins at 4 p.m.

Parade participants should be there between 2 and 2:30 p.m. so they can be lined up. The parade will include antique vehicles, fire trucks, re-enactors, and more.

Those interested in participating in the bike decorating contest should arrive at the parking lot of the old Stockburger Chevrolet on Syacmore Street between 2 and 2:30 p.m.

Bike decorating awards will be given out at about 8:30 p.m. At 9:15 p.m., there will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence. The fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. following the Declaration of Independence.

Parking for the fireworks is $5. Proceeds from the fee benefit the Civil Air Patrol Squadron 101 based out of Lower Bucks County, which is helping to direct parking.  Fireworks parking will be at Council Rock High School North.

First Fourth committee members say they are still seeking local businesses to sponsor the festivities. A $500 donation will enable businesses to have a banner in the parade as well as up at the fireworks. Plus, sponsoring businesses will get two VIP passes to the fireworks.

Another way to help is by volunteering to set up that day. The planning committee is seeking people to help set up at the Middle School. If you are interested in helping, contact Marlowe Gordon at Marne136gordon@gmail.com.
