Poll: What Store Do You Think Newtown Needs the Most?

With the news that Genuardi's is becoming Giant, some in the community say they feel let down by the lack of grocery store options.

Last week, Giant announced it will purchase 16 Genuardi's stores in the Greater Philadelphia area. The Genuardi's in Newtown is one of the 16 slated to be turned into Giant stores.

Many in the community have expressed frustration that Newtown's food store options are limited. With one just off the bypass, and another in Yardley, there are already a few Giants just a few miles away.

What do you think? Are you glad Genuardi's will become Giant or do you think Newtown needs some variety? If so, what store would you most like to see come to town.

That's what a lot of people used to think and follow. Then the job market crashed, so they found they couldn't really pay more for quality food because there are other things, such as heating and water bills. But if you happen to lose your job, come back and tell us if you are still paying more for quality.

I've been shopping at Whole Foods for 15 years and will continue to do so not matter what my financial circumstances may be- it's not just a question of expense, it's a question of health and what is better for the environment. If you choose otherwise for yourself- so be it. But I have no intention of lowering my standards. And it would appear that there are plenty of people in this area who agree...

WOW- it almost sounds as if you (James Mayer) would hope that people lose their jobs. There are many individuals out there who are fortunate enough to have stable situations despite the current problems with the economy. Very bitter comment! I'm on the side of quality and I too am willing to pay for it!

Who knew that people could be so absurdly and unnecessarily nasty? Shop where you want and eat crappy corporate food if that's what makes you feel good. Like I said before, I have supported Whole Foods for 15 years and I will continue to do so no matter what. I know plenty of individuals who are in tight financial situations at the moment and they also continue to shop at Whole Foods because it is a lifestyle choice. In fact, Whole Foods prices are better than both Genaurdi's and Giant when it comes to organic/ health foods because there it is not considered to be a "specialty item." But you obviously don't have much experience with these things....

Isn't it WHOLE FOODS who's getting their "ORGANIC"
frozen food from China.?
Are you aware of how the Chinese fertilize their fields ?
Give me Wegmans any day !!!!!!

That it totally untrue- where did you ever hear such ridiculous propaganda? Whole Foods does NOT import their frozen foods from China. That is a completely absurd thing to purport. Whole Foods obtains the vast majority of their products from the United States, barring a few gourmet specialty items such as cheese, cured meats, some fruit from South America, New Zealand Mussels, etc. It's far more likely that a store like Wegman's, or Giant for that matter, would bring in food from China. Whole Foods has set the standard for organic foods and sells nothing that isn't USDA certified and approved.

Wegman's, even McCaffrey's. But it won't happen. Even though there's a Giant at Summit Square, they are going to want the Newtown dollar.

WHOLE FOODS is the BEST!!! Newtown definitely needs a Whole Foods. And people should be careful about saying things like "Whole Foods gets their organic frozen foods from China" because it isn't true and easily verifiable!!!!! Whole Foods is great!

Trader Joe's or Whole Foods would be perfect for Newtown. I stopped shopping at Genuardi's when they sold out years ago and I have NO intention of shopping at Giant. Princeton isn't that far away and Wegman's is about an equal distance from Newtown.

I am just glad to see Genuardi's gone. Their service is about as lame as it gets and they so deserve to be gone. Can't count the number of times I put my items down when I realized they had one checker on duty and 15 people in line (and that was only in desperation to step inside their store in the first place). Can I help you pack, Genuardi's? Good riddens!

We have been praying for a Whole Foods since we moved here from Chicago 9 yrs ago. They support locally grown, and have the highest standards in the industry as far as what products are allowed on their shelves. Each item is vetted by a panel to ensure only the best ingredients are in the product. It's nice to know others are looking out for what we put into our bodies (and our children).

If "lifestyle choice" keeps you driving 40 miles roundtrip to Whole Foods because they're "good for the environment" and "price isn't an issue," I say good for you. Just drop the sanctimony, your neighbors are struggling out here.
