Thousands Without Power, State St. Still Dark

PECO crews are working around the clock to restore power to thousands of customers who lost service due to Hurricane Sandy.

There's no line at Starbucks.

No one is at Isaac Newton's and the lights are off at Newtown Hardware.

State Street, along with thousands of area residences, is dark.

Hurricane Sandy came through earlier in the week, knocking out power for about half of Newtown Borough and 6,500 customers in Newtown Township. On Tuesday, more than 850,000 PECO customers were without power.

As of Wednesday, PECO was reporting less then 3,500 outages in Newtown Township and as many as 1,500 in Newtown Borough.

PECO said crews are working around the clock to restore power for area customers. Many Newtown Township residents have reported receiving an estimate of 11 p.m. tonight for restoration.

A State Street business owner also reported he received a restoration estimate of 11 p.m. tonight.

Now that the power has been restored, please check this government website that advises disposition on food in your fridge and freezer.

No power for UM no surprise there. We are always last. Many are on wells which means no water no toilets. PECO goes to high density areas first. We just gave up after years of fighting w PECO and bought a generator. Unfortunately every road leading to our home has downed trees and wires. Hence no propane delivery.

Hi Vi....we just moved to UM. We should've listened to neighbors. They told us "We'll be last with power. It's a lost cause here". I thought they are exaggerating but my mistake. So i'm at home with a newborn, 50 degrees in the house, and toilets filled with stuff and not working.

I would've never dreamed that people would accept this, but alas, I guess that's the way it is.

Off topic, but has UM ever considered going onto city or county water? A neighbor told me that the locals want to feel "independent" and "different" so they prefer well water. To each his own, but I can honestly say that my overflowing toilets aren't making me feel special.

I would like to thank all the workers at PECO who are working around the clock getting power back on. We in Newtown are fortunate compared to NJ folks with not only no power, but no gas as well.

Special thanks to Kara for her hard work tracking down and keeping us appraised of things Newtown. Great work!!

I know everyone is having a bad time. But, hoping PECO can get the Upper Makefield / Woodhill Road area done soon? No power is fine. Freezing house, ok. But we're on well and septic so there's stinky stuff in all the toilets for 2 + days now. PECO said we'd have power by 11pm Tuesday night. Now they say 10pm Wednesday night.

Please PECO, hoping you can get it done today.
