Township Trick-or-Treating to be held Next Week

Township Supervisors Chair Mike Gallagher said communities that have power can celebrate tonight, but a second, "safe" trick-or-treat will be held Nov. 7.

Newtown Township will hold trick-or-treating next Wednesday, Nov. 7, supervisors Chair Mike Gallagher confirmed to Patch.

Thousands of Newtown residents are without power due to Hurricane Sandy, making trick-or-treating a safety issue.

Gallagher said residents with power are not prohibited from celebrating the holiday, but a second, "safe" trick-or-treat night will be held next week.

Township Supervisor Ryan Gallagher (not related to Mike Gallagher) posted the following statement on his Facebook page: "In light of the safety hazards and power outages in Newtown Township caused by Hurricane Sandy, Newtown Township will be providing another opportunity to celebrate Halloween and trick-or-treat, on Wednesday, November 7th. We recognize that many of our communities are without power, and do not want our children to be deprived of the opportunity to trick-or-treat safely."

For those neighborhoods with power, tonight’s trick-or-treat may go on as planned. We leave the decision to participate in trick or treat this evening, to the families in those affected areas

Many area communities, including Newtown Borough, have asked residents to postpone trick-or-treating.

This is nonsense. All the kids are going to the communites with lights and the again on the 7th. As quick as this notice went out, kids were texting their plans. Make it for all communities wether there is electric or not. And what about those who don't read Patch. I can't believe other towns have responsible elected officals. Abington - Postponed until Sat. Many sections have picked their own days. Most are Friday or Saturday nights. None are for Wednesday.

We have power, we count ourselves very lucky. So, we will be handing out treats both nights. What the heck - the kids are cute and we love seeing them.

I agree with John B. Ridiculous resolution by our elected officials. Make it Nov 7th for everyone. No one is going to remember which neighborhood had power and which did not. One date should have been chosen and communicated through the shcool system as other responsible communities have done. Diane

This should be held the same day for all of the township/boro. Our neighborhood chose Sunday and posted it in the development. Wednesday would have been better for sure, not sure how this date was chosen.

You people need to calm down. People have died from this storm and other's have their homes and businesses completely destroyed, and you are upset because you might have to buy two $10 bags of candy instead of one? Relax.
