What's all the panic about?

Do you realize that everytime the news posts we are going to have a snowstorm, everyone flocks to the supermarket? What is it in our brains that makes us want to whip up a cake or Carmelized French toast? Even if the snowstorm will keep us in for the weekend, don't we have enough food to sustain us for two days? Being from South Philadelphia, the supermarkets looked like a nightclub at the mere thought of a snowstorm. I would go in and see everyone I knew and catch up on some old friends while standing in the checkout line with a cart full of food. I had to be dressed because God forbid I go there in sweats and sneakers. I didn't want anyone to see me that way, since I knew I would see everyone and their grandmother there. Since moving to Newtown, it's definitely different, but I still see the panic in people's eyes as I pass them in the aisles. I wonder if the media made a deal with the supermarkets to drum up business? Anyway, the food is in the freezer, because it was not the snowstorm that was expected. Maybe it'll save me a trip the next time. Until then......

You are so right! The Acme in the heart of South Philly on Friday night was like
Christine's on South Street in 90's! And of course, an hour later, with two bags full of homemade chicken soup ingredients , I was so relieved that I freshend up my lipstick before going in!!! haha

Exactly true! I am one of those people who decides to buy cookie dough just because I may be stuck inside because of the snow! Too funny!

I find this to be true anywhere you live! Extra loafs of bread that you wind up freezing and spoiled milk being poured down the drain; do what I do and order that extra pizza from your favorite pizzeria or make that big pot of "gravy" with meatballs! Guarantee, no wasted food or beauty supplies!! Lol!

Very true! I, too, made sure that I had all of the ingredients for my home-made chicken soup. I did make it, and it made my whole family feel cozy while we anticipated the storm that never showed up.

There is something about snowstorms, who knows what it is but we all seem to make a big pot of soup or gravy. Don't forget the yummy treats!!

Well said! Even up here in Rochester, New York, where we are more than used to and prepared for this kind of weather, the mere mention of a snow storm has the Wegmans family seeing dollar signs! And we, myself included, give in everytime "just in case" because "you never know!"

I think the Meterologists and the Supermarkets are in Cahoots.

As in everything that is going on in today's world, the media is the culprit. The reporters foam at the mouth at the thought of a snowstorm or any other larger than life event, and we all buy into it. I guess it's second nature - just in case!!
