Bach Cantata Fest

84 E Oakland Ave, Doylestown, PA | Get Directions »
$35.00

The Dryden Ensemble will celebrate the New Year with a “Bach Cantata Fest” featuring the acclaimed vocal ensemble TENET, whose performances have been described as "sheer joy for the listener" (New York Times). Tickets are available at the door or online at http://www.drydenensemble.org.

Fans of Baroque music will delight in the all-Bach program featuring two grand sinfonias with obbligato organ from Cantatas 146 and 169, reworked by Bach from earlier concerto movements, and two glorious sacred cantatas: "Aus der Tiefe rufe ich, Herr, zu dir" (BWV 131) and "Ich hab' in Gottes Herz und Sinn" (BWV 92).

Both cantatas are masterful settings of the texts and express a wide range of affects, from a stormy seascape for tenor and agitated strings to a calm pastoral for soprano, oboe d'amore and pizzicato strings. BWV 131, written in Mühlhausen in 1707 when Bach was only twenty-two, may be his earliest sacred cantata. BWV 92, a tour de force written in Leipzig nearly twenty years later, shows Bach at the height of his expressive powers.

The Dryden Ensemble will be joined by a quartet of singers from the vocal ensemble TENET: Jolle Greenleaf, soprano and artistic director; Ryland Angel, countertenor; David Vanderwal, tenor; and Charles Wesley Evans, bass. Instrumentalists will include Jane McKinley and Virginia Brewer, oboes d'amore; Vita Wallace and Andrea Andros, violins; Mark Zaki, viola; Lisa Terry, cello; Sue Black, bassoon; and Joseph Gascho, chamber organ.
