SLU Bucks County Student Leadership Conference
Bucks County Based Student Leadership Conference Open to Middle and High School Students
The Student Leader Union, a Bucks County based 501(c)3 non-profit organization, will be holding its second annual student leadership conference at Bucks County Community College Newtown campus on Saturday, November 10th from 8:30AM to 4:00PM. The conference will feature 12 workshops led by adult experts as well as a keynote speech by nationally recognized student leader Timothy Hwang. Price for admission is a $5 recommended donation.
The Student Leader Union (SLU) believes that leadership is an excellent path for teens to achieve greater confidence. And SLU doesn’t just believe in student leadership; the 501(c)3 non-profit organization is run entirely by middle and high school students from across Bucks County.
Last November, the Student Leader Union held its first leadership conference for middle and high school students. To the delight of the student organizers, the conference attracted over 80 attendees, filling up the registration and wait lists. The 80 student attendees represented 25 schools from as far away as Media, Pennsylvania.
Since then, the Student Leader Union has grown to an organization with volunteers from many different schools. Students like Eishna Ranganathan, a freshman at Neshaminy High School and secretary of the SLU, have learned leadership from experience.
“I’ve volunteered [for the Student Leader Union] at a number of different community events – Northhampton Days, Newtown’s Market Day, and even the Newtown Grant Yard Sale,” Ranganathan said. “I’ve already learned a lot about getting the word out to students and their families.”
Raphael Cohen, a junior at Council Rock North, has also volunteered with the Student Leader Union. “Working with student leaders has shown me all the great things my peers and I are capable of doing,” Cohen said. “It’s very inspiring.”
Students like Raphael and Eishna have been working hard on planning the upcoming conference, which will feature 12 workshops designed to teach students specific strategies for leadership success. Topics covered will include fundraising, teamwork development, event planning, motivation, and even college counseling. The day will conclude with a keynote speech by Timothy Hwang, a 20-year-old Princeton University student and founder of the National Youth Association, which has over 75,000 members nationwide.
The SLU conference is expected to fill up, and so students who are interested in attending should register as soon as possible. Registration and more information on the conference can be found on the SLU website: http://www.StudentLeaderUnion.org.
