Matt Pine Named 'Student of the Year' by GNEC

Pine earned straight As at Council Rock North and was elected to the National Honor Society.

Recent Council Rock graduate Matt Pine took top honors at a Greater Newtown Exchange Club (GNEC) July 10 award ceremony where he received GNEC’s Student of the Year award. This coveted award and accompanying monetary gift is awarded annually to a winning student selected from GNEC’s Student of the Month award winners. The win signifies the epitome of the winning student’s academic achievements, social outreach and service to others.

Pine earned straight As at Council Rock North and was elected to the National Honor Society and to honorary societies in Math, English, Science and Social Studies. His commitment to learning also earned him selection to the Ivy League Model UN where his group put forth resolutions to accommodate the human rights needs of people suffering from mental disabilities and armed conflicts around the world.

In addition to his academic achievements, Pine sang in the choir his junior and senior years and participated all four years on the volleyball and cross country teams, achieving varsity status. Council Rock’s North’s 2000-member student body also elected Pine to the Homecoming Court this past year.

For community service, Pine chose Camp Invention, a South Africa project which raised funds for South African people suffering from poverty after apartheid. Fundraising for this cause began in Pine’s 10th grade English class.

Pine plans to attend Franciscan University, after which he will enroll in Pharmacy School. GNEC members were impressed by Pine’s charming personality, particularly when he included in his achievements that he was an uncle of two and a godfather of one. Pine will spend much of this summer working at his regular job at RiteAid Summit Square.
