Two Local Residents Headed to Winter Olympics in Sochi

Bobsledder Jamie Greubel of Newtown and figure skater Nathan Bartholomay, an Upper Makefield native, will compete in Sochi.

Two local athletes are headed to Sochi to compete in the Olympic Winter Games.

Jamie Greubel of Newtown is headed to Sochi as a member of the U.S. women’s bobsled team.

Figure skater Nathan Bartholomay, an Upper Makefield native, will be competing in pairs figure skating with his partner Felicia Zhang.

According to his official profile on NBC’s Olympics website, Bartholomay, 24, qualified for the Olympics after winning a silver medal at the 2014 U.S. Championships.

Bartholomay has been skating with Zhang since 2011. The pair, which won bronze in last year’s U.S. Championships, trains in Florida.

According to his profile, he began skating when he was eight and also played competitive baseball until he was 18.

Greubel joined the U.S. women’s bobsled team before the 2007-2008 season, according to her profile on NBC’s Olympics website. With five World Cup medals, she is the second ranked driver in the world, according to the U.S. Bobsled & Skeleton Federation.

"It's official! I will be representing Team USA in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics on the US Women's Bobsled Team. This is such an incredible experience, and it still hasn't quite sunk in," Greubel announced Sunday on her official Facebook page.

Greubel graduated from Cornell University in 2006, according to her bio.

The Olympics opening ceremonies will be held Friday, Feb. 7. The winter games will go through Feb. 23. Click here to view the full schedule.
