Award-Winning Poet to Read at BCCC April 25

Award-winning poet Evie Shockley will present later this month as part of Bucks County Community College’s Wordsmiths Reading Series.  The poetry reading, part of the month-long Arts at Bucks celebrations, is free and open to the public. The event will be held April 25  at 7:30 p.m 

Shockley, a Nashville native, has written several collections of poetry, including a half-red sea (2006) and the new black (2011).

Shockley is also the author of the critical volume Renegade Poetics: Black Aesthetics and Formal Innovation in African American Poetry (2011).  

Shockley’s honors include the Holmes National Poetry Prize and fellowships from Cave Canem, the Millay Colony for the Arts, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York Public Library. Shockley is a professor at Rutgers University. She lives in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The poetry reading takes place in the Orangery building on the Newtown Campus, 275 Swamp Rd., Newtown. Admission and parking are free.

The Wordsmiths Reading Series is sponsored by college’s Cultural Advisory Group, Cultural Programming Committee and the Language and Literature Department.
