Brewfest Will Bring Cheer, Raise Funds

Raise a glass at the first Washington Crossing Brewfest on Saturday, May 14 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Be a part of history and raise a glass at the first Washington Crossing Brewfest on Saturday, May 14 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Beer tastings will be offered by over fifty breweries along with live music and food.

“We’ll have only high end microbeers that you won’t find everywhere,” said Dennis Wackowski, one of the event organizers and a manager at Isaac Newton’s Restaurant. “There will be an array covering national and some European brews.”

The event takes place along the Delaware River in Washington Crossing Historic Park, where George Washington’s troops were encamped and launched the boats that secured their victory.

“Drinking great beers in a state park -- this is the first time I’ve ever seen that,“ Wackowski said. “The setting is phenomenal. Most brewfests are in parking lots -- this is in the woods on the Delaware River. And they’re usually in the fall, not in the spring.”

Presented by the Friends of Washington Crossing, proceeds will help defray some of the operating costs needed for Washington Crossing Historic Park to host tours and educational programming in light of budget cuts.

“There's a lot of history there, so it's a great cause. Brewfests are huge moneymakers for nonprofits; this is a great way to help the park cover costs,” said Wackowski.

Participating breweries include Allagash, Brooklyn Brewery, Flying Fish, Harpoon, Otter Creek, Triumph, Riverhorse, Long Trail, Sierra Nevada, and more. A full list is located on the Brewfest Web site, http://www.washingtoncrossingbrewfest.com.

The band UP2SNUFF will perform, with guest appearances from The Hard Attacks and Shabby Road. The rain or shine event is for adults only (21 or older with a valid ID).  No children or pets allowed. Up to 2,000 attendees are expected.

“We’re trying to establish an event that will grow every year,” Wackowski said. “I’m 99 percent sure the event will sell out this year, so don’t wait to purchase tickets.”

Tickets are $40 and may be purchased online at the Washington Crossing Brewfest Web site or at one of the participating locations. (Check the site for details.)
