is gearing up for its sixth annual Art for Relief event, which will be held on Saturday, April 9.

Art for Relief is a student-organized night of visual and performing arts that brings together students, faculty and local community members to raise money for a cause.  The evening will begin with an art show and silent auction at 6 p.m. in the George School Meetinghouse. Performances in Walton Center Auditorium follow at 7:30 p.m.

This year’s beneficiary is the Philly Youth Poetry Movement (PYPM), which will receive all proceeds from the event.

PYPM is an arts-related group that provides a safe space for Philadelphia’s at-risk youth ages 13 to 19. It helps them to use their voices to promote social change, leadership, and cultural diversity while building self-esteem, explained Juliana Rosati, George School’s Public Relations and Special Events Director.

The art show will feature work produced and donated by George School students, faculty, and friends, Rosati said. The silent auction will include artwork contributed by local professional artists, along with other items donated by local businesses, alumni, and parents. In addition, T-shirts will be sold.

Junior Bryan Silverman is one of three students running Art for Relief in collaboration with faculty sponsor Gretchen Nordleaf-Nelson.

“I hope that Art for Relief will continue to accomplish its mission of spreading empathy, compassion, and awareness for the global community through service,” Silverman said. “I am proud of the unique way that Art for Relief achieves this goal, through the spreading of art and performance for a greater cause.”

Silverman said PYPM is a “fantastic” local organization. “It aids the youth of Philadelphia in an original and important way—through the facilitation of spoken-word poetry competitions and workshops, as well as general writing workshops, that provide a safe haven for the at-risk youth of Philadelphia.”

Julia Um, a junior from Fairless Hills, is also helping to organize the event. She said helping those so close to home brings awareness to our community. “By supporting a local charity, we can see the impact of our work more clearly, and therefore have a better understanding of how exceedingly important charitable work and volunteering are,” Um said.
