Help Newtown Theatre Pick Movies for Grand Opening Week

The theatre's single-elimination tournament kicked off today and voting is happening on Facebook.

Help the Newtown Theatre decide which four movies will be the first to be screened on its new digital projector later this month.

The theatre’s single-elimination tournament kicked off today and voting is happening on Facebook.

Voters will pick from the top 16 movies of all time. Each day, the public can vote on which movie should “advance” in the tournament. The “Final Four” left standing will be shown during the theatre’s grand opening week from May 26 to 29.

“The price of admission to each movie will be the same price that was charged the year the movie was released (for some of these movies that will be quite the deal!). To make things even more interesting, at the end of the tournament one lucky voter will randomly be chosen to receive free movies at the Newtown Theatre for a year,” the theatre announced on its Facebook page.

The theatre followed American Film Institute’s top 100 movies of all time to determine the top 16 films. “In some cases, we can’t get all of the films so we had to leave those out of the tournament (for example, Star Wars). We did the best we could to follow the top 16 on the list. To create this bracket, we randomly pulled the movies out of a hat and paired them up in the order they were pulled,” the theatre said on its Facebook page.
