Historic Association's Market Day is Saturday

Organizers expect more than 60 crafters, demonstrators and artists at Market Day, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Half Moon Inn on Court Street and Centre Ave.

Market Day is this Saturday and will feature crafters, music, food, kids entertainment and more.

The annual colonial craft and art fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Half Moon Inn on Court Street and Centre Ave. The event is sponsored by the Newtown Historic Association.

Organizers expect more than 60 crafters, demonstrators and artists to be in attendance with a wide variety of crafts -- llike quilting, rug braiding, spinning, fine arts, photography and woodcarving.

The Newtown Historic Association has hosted Market Day for more than three decades. This custom revives an old harvest season tradition in Newtown, when local farmers brought their crops to town to sell and enjoy a day of festivities and contests that culminated with a horse race down State Street, according to organizers.

There is plenty in store for the day. From noon to 3 p.m., there will be demonstrations of candle dipping, punched tin and other colonial crafts. There will be face painting, children’s crafts and live entertainment. Belgian draft horses from A Better Way Farm will be offering horse-drawn hayrides around the Court, Penn, Congress and Mercer streets.

Market Day organizers said there will be plenty of food from local restaurants, including Isaac Newton’s, Lee’s Hoagie's and Styers. Best Darn Kettle Corn will be offering fresh kettle corn. There will be open hearth cooking by Mercy Ingraham, who uses only old methods of cooking and colonial recipes.
