Literate Epicures of Newtown: A Book Club With Good Taste

Each month, the Literate Epicures of Newtown meet at the Newtown Bookshop to share recipes from a single cookbook selected in advance.

Ever open up a cookbook but are absolutely stymied as to where to begin?  The Literate Epicures of Newtown have come to the rescue.

The Literate Epicures of Newtown is a hands-on cookbook exploration troop with a social twist.

The club, which meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Newtown Bookshop, selects a cookbook of the month and then its members collaboratively create a variety of recipes from that book.

The Literate Epicures of Newtown meet next on July 12 at 7 p.m. The book for July is the “Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival Cookbook.”

Alexandra Gallagher started the group in February. “I am an avid cook and cookbook collector,” explained Gallagher. She wanted to get a group of people together who shared her passion for culinary exploration.

Each participant picks a recipe from the book of the month and then brings it to the casual gathering. One member acts a point person to coordinate recipes so that there are no duplicates, Gallagher explained.  Someone who is not cooking brings wine and beverages, she added.

“We are surging ahead,” Gallagher said, adding the group draws anywhere from seven to 15 participants each week, depending on the time of year or the cookbook.

Gallagher has set up a blog about the club: click here to check it out.

And check back to Patch for a more detailed report of The Literate Epicures of Newtown after we get an opportunity to attend the club – and maybe even try our hand at a new recipe!
