See a Movie for $0.23 in Newtown Later This Month

The Newtown Theatre is hosting a grand reopening celebration and has selected four classic movies to be screened; tickets will cost the same amount they did the year the films were released.

When was the last time you could see a movie for $0.23?

In 1939—the year “Wizard of Oz” was released.

But this month, film lovers in Newtown will have a chance 75 years later to see a movie for that now bargain price.

The Newtown Theatre is hosting a grand reopening celebration week from May 26 to 29 and has selected four classic movies to be screened during the festivities. Tickets will cost the same amount they did the year the films were released.

The movies were selected through a single-elimination tournament; voting was held on the theatre’s Facebook page.

The four classic films that have been selected include: “The Godfather,” which will cost $1.70; “Singin’ in the Rain,” which will cost $0.53; “Casablanca,” which will cost $0.27; and “Wizard of Oz,” which will cost $0.23. 

Voters picked from the top 16 movies of all time. The theatre followed American Film Institute’s top 100 movies of all time to determine the top 16 films.
