Welcome Day to Feature 'Rising Stars' Contest

The local singing competition has categories for both adults and students.

Then be sure to catch the Rising Stars competition at Newtown Welcome Day, which is set for Sunday, May 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  It features vendors, food, entertainment, kids' activities and more.

The singing competition will feature both adults and students, who will perform for a $250 prize. The competition will be held outdoors at

“Each contestant will sing their first song, the judges will pick three semifinalists and the winner will sing a winner's song,” said event organizer Dan Paulish.

The adult competition is for anyone who has graduated from high school. The student contest is open for kids in grades seven through 12.

Bill Marsh Ford is sponsoring a $250 prize for each of the two winners, Paulish said.

This year’s judges are: Andrew Cordes, Chuck Schaeffer, and Lisa Jones.  Schaeffer and Jones will perform after the contest.

Two Newtown Idol contest winners will perform, Paulish said. Newtown Idol is the annual singing competition that’s held on First Night.
