Adopt a Bed on Sycamore Street

No, not the kind for sleeping. The kind with pretty plants.

Do you want to help Newtown look its best but don’t exactly have a green thumb?

The Sycamore Street Community Association has started an “Adopt-a-Bed” maintenance program that allows residents and businesses to sponsor one of 10 landscape beds along Sycamore Street.

The program was developed after Newtown Township, facing budgetary restrictions, approached SSCA to see if it would be able to help with bed cleaning, mulching, and planting.

After speaking with township officials, Shawn Ward, SSCA president, and Vince Lombardi, chairman of the SSCA Governmental Affairs Committee, created the “Adopt-a-Bed” program.

Andrew’s Lawn Ranger will perform the maintenance work at cost. Local sponsors will chip in to cover the costs incurred by Andrew’s Lawn Ranger. Sponsor fees range from $250 to $500 per bed.

Folks have already stepped forward to participate.

The first sponsor was the Leck family of Leck Waste Services, who will dedicate the double bed located at Swamp Road and Sycamore Street in honor of family patriarch George Leck, who passed away in 2010.  Other sponsors include Tyrol Insurance and the Green Parrot.

“In light of these tough economic times and tight budgets, we reached out to the Sycamore Street community for assistance, and they answered the call,” Ward said.

Lombardi added that to do nothing was not an option, as the maintenance of the landscape beds are key to the vitality and success of the street, which was reconstructed several years ago.
