Bakery, Specialty Shops Needed on State Street, Residents Say

After Newtown Patch posted a call for input on what should occupy three vacancies on State Street, users overwhelmingly said they'd like to have a bakery in town.

If you’ve ever considered opening a bakery, State Street just might be the place to put it.

After Newtown Patch posted a call for input on what should occupy three vacant store fronts on State Street, readers and Facebook users overwhelmingly said they’d like to have a bakery in town.

One Patch reader said he’d like to see a good “everyman’s bakery” that sells fresh bread and pies. “Whatever happened to getting a few cupcakes without having to break the bank? We can live like the French and stop by every morning for a fresh croissant or muffin. Imagine the wonderful smell of fresh bread wafting down State Street every morning,” user Longtime Resident write.

User Nana6 agreed. “We could use a French style patisserie,” she said.

Many readers who commented on the story posted to Facebook site also said they’d also like to see a bakery—“a real bakery that uses nothing but whole food ingredients like cream, butter and sugar,” wrote user Thomas Bowler.

Readers say they don’t think Newtown needs more pizza places, salons or banks. “As far as what I'd like to see, anything retail! What I don't want to see is another salon, Italian restaurant or office,” user Harry wrote.

Other suggestions included:

  • a diner
  • an authentic Mexican restaurant
  • a vegetarian grill
  • cheese shop
  • butcher
  • sea food shop
