Company Taking Personal Approach to Energy Deregulation

Newtown's New American Power is trying to be different than other energy and natural gas providers in the area.

Young, fresh-faced salespeople walking door-to-door in Newtown and telemarketing calls to locals at inconvenient hours.

That’s the marketing plan employed by several electric and natural gas suppliers that have targeted the area after Pennsylvania's took effect in early 2011.

The team at Newtown-based New America Power is taking a different and more friendly approach - taking only referrals for residential and business customers.

“Our goal is to come into the Newtown community and help everyone make the right decision,” said Lonnie Barish,  senior energy consultant with the company and a local resident.

Steve Esposito, a partner at the company, said the comapny's goal is for everyone to understand energy deregulation and how it works. He says picking the energy supplier can save customers money. “Every penny counts” in the current economy, he adds.

Esposito said the switch from paying your bill to another electric or natural gas provider is nearly seamless and is merely a minor change at the end of the month. A change that he said is often only noticed in the form of savings.

Customers of the the local company can average between 10 to 30 percent in savings on a monthly bill, the New American Power duo claims. The company purchases energy directly from the cheapest of several wholesalers they are affiliated with.

While many of New American Power’s competitors use a “one-size-fits” all approach to billing, Barish said, New American Power sets each customers rate based on their needs. “We help get the best contract for the customer,” Esponsito said. “Certain contracts fits certain customers better.”

New American Power has dozens of residential and commercial clients in the area. The and are among list of local clients.

The company, which has offices on University Drive in Newtown, also offers several energy and green power consulting services to customers.

Barish said the majority of those who come to the company for help with solar energy initiatives are larger commercial firms, not residential customers. “Solar just hasn’t caught on around here,” he said.

Recently, the company inked a deal that will provide a 624 unit apartment complex in the Germantown section of Philadelphia with 100 percent wind powered electricity.

The deal is one of many that the company is working on in several states where it operates, Esposito said.
