Date for Genuardi's to Giant Conversion Not Set

A spokesman for Giant said no date has been set for the supermarket chain to take over Genuardi's.

Despite what the cashiers may tell you, a date for to convert to Giant has not been set yet.

Christopher Brand, a spokesman for Giant, said the supermarket chain has not finalized a date for the store to change hands. "We do not know when the final regulatory approval decision will come," Brand said in an email Sunday.

The deal is subject to Federal Trade Commission review.

But when the transition does take place, the store will close for approximately a week, Brand said. When the store changes hands, the Giant brand will be offered instead of the Safeway brand. Genuardi's is owned by Safeway.

In January, in the Greater Philadelphia region, including the one in the Village at Newtown Shopping Center. The $106 million deal also included locations in Langhorne, Jamison, Chalfont and West Chester.

I think I'm going to abandon Newtown food markets and shop at McCaffrey's, which is the closest we have to a Whole Foods. I want organic, I want milk from grass fed cows in glass bottles. I want locally grown food in season. I also like the fact that the owner gives back to the community. I've been a vegetarian since 1978, and I want a bigger choice than the stores in Newtown and Summit Square give me.

There's an empty grocery location in the shopping center that has Kohls...would make a great Whole Foods location. Rumor has it that McCaffrey's keeps blocking it!

According to several Giant managers, The Federal Trade Commission will NOT permit Giant to acquire three Genuardi's due to close proximity competitive concerns. Springfield, Kennett Square and Newtown now need another retailer to take lease.

Pathmark would be very nice.

Brand is a liar, the FTC already told Giant No to three locations.

Sam, thanks for pointing that out. I've reached out to the FTC to find out what the ruling was on Giant's application.

It is nobody's business but GIant if they want 16 stores vice the 13 the FTC want them to have. We have weaklings of wussies in the FTC!

One of the employees of Genuardi's told me yesterday that are NOT being converted to a Giant. No more details were available.

Genuardi's employees have told me several different things. The only person I can get information reliable enough to print is from corporate HQ. At this point, they are not releasing anything. Nor is the FTC.

Is it hard to imagine ANOTHER abandoned supermarket building in Newtown? The number of "For Rent" signs especially on Sycamore Street has been increasing. Add that to two abandoned car dealerships and just how America as a whole is faring is staring you right in the face!

Alan, I've heard that too but it's unconfirmed as far as I know. Do you know that for a fact or just the hearsay that's going around?

Giant is owned by a foreign government, unfriendly to us in America. Jim McCaffrey is a Democratic leader.
