East Meets West At New Borough Spa

Spa Haven uses traditional and Chinese massage techniques as well as herbal infusions to help clients relax.

When Spa Haven owner, Jingrong Li, opened her new spa, she was looking to use skills she learned as a physical therapist in her native homeland China and mix them with techniques she picked up in the United States.

Li opened Spa Haven on State Street at the beginning of June. She had an office a few miles away, but she said when she saw this building available, she decided it was the perfect place to grow her business.

Spa Haven offers a variety of services from traditional massages, facials and waxing to acupuncture, Thai massages and light therapy to help skin ailments, such as acne and psoriasis.

Li partners with acupuncturist David Creamer who runs his own place called Subtle Points P.C., also in Newtown. Creamer and Li work together to help advise their clients on the best options to help their ailments.

She became interested in massage techniques when she moved to the United States 16 years ago and was unable to continue practicing as a physical therapist. She then started classes and earned certificates in massage from the Langhorne Professional School of Massage and the American Beauty Academy of Philadelphia

“In China, part of my patients’ treatments usually included massage,” she explained.

Li said she mixes traditional Chinese massage with techniques she learned here. She said she often uses both Chinese herbs and essential oils in massages as well as focuses on acupressure points to release pain.

Creamer began college as a pre-med student and although he knew he wanted to help people, he decided he would not follow the traditional medical path. He entered the Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe, N.M. after graduating with a degree in psychology from college.

Li said she is thrilled to offer alternatives that help her clients relax and heal their bodies and is excited about her new location in Newtown.

Spa Haven is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is located at 154 North State Street in Newtown. Call 215-968-6888 for more information.
