Oishi Looking to Move

The Asian-inspired restaurant is seeking to move to the other side of the shopping center in the space formerly occupied by Basil Leaf.

Oishi is looking to move its Newtown restaurant—but not very far.

The Asian-inspired restaurant is seeking to move its location across the street to the vacant storefronts formerly occupied by Basil Leaf and The Fresh Works.

Oishi representatives will be in front of the Newtown Township Planning Commission Tuesday seeking approval for the restaurant in that location. The Board of Supervisors is expected to review the application at its Sept. 11 meeting.

According to the application, Oishi is seeking to convert the two vacant spaces into one restaurant totaling more than 4,800-square-feet. The 179-seat restaurant will be located next to Serenity Nails in the section of the shopping center that also includes McCaffrey’s supermarket.

The Fresh Works was only open for a short time when owner Mike Mayberry said the property manager pulled out of a negotiated lease without an explanation.

Mayberry said the shop was operating under the terms of the Lee's Hoagie House lease and Brixmor Property later notified him that was not permitted. Lee's Hoagie House was located in the spot before The Fresh Works briefly took it over.

According to its website, Oishi is a family-owned restaurant that opened in Newtown in 1999.

Oishi, which means "delicious" in Japanese, offers an array of Japanese, Korean and Thai cuisine.
