Volunteers Needed for Welcome Day

The annual street fair will be held Sunday, May 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Newtown is gearing up for Welcome Day 2011, to be held May 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sycamore Street. About 20 more volunteers are needed to help that day, organizers say.

This is the first year the street fair and business showcase event will be on Sycamore Street. In the past, it was held on State Street.

The Newtown Business and Professional Association organizes the event, which is an opportunity for businesses to meet members of the community and families to enjoy games, prizes, and activities.

Jacki Pitkow, a team manager with Tastefully Simple and a NBPA member, said this year they expect about 75 booths at the event.  Pitkow said the group anticipates 8,000 to 10,000 people will attend.

In order to ensure the success of the event, the NBPA relies on volunteers to help set up, clean up, and assist throughout the day.

Pitkow said the NBPA is looking for 20 more people to help in two-hour increments or more from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Duties include early morning set up of tables and chairs, placing of trash containers and signs, assisting people with directions, manning the NBPA booth and answering questions, collecting prize entry forms, and clean up at the end of the day.

Those interested in volunteering should contact Pitkow at 215.208.5415 or jpitkow@comcast.net.

The event promises to be fun for the entire family, organizers say. New this year, aside from the location, is an American Idol-style competition and the chance to win an Apple iPad. There will also be arts and crafts on sale, entertainment, food, giveaways, entertainment, and more.
