5 Things You Need to Know Today: August 30

Essential information about the day ahead in Newtown.

1. Today is the first day of school for most Council Rock schools. However, four elementary schools from Hurricane Irene and will not be open with the rest of the district. Wrightstown Elementary School, Sol Feinstone Elementary School, Hillcrest Elementary School and Rolling Hills Elementary School will not open as scheduled. All other schools in the Council Rock School District will open today for students in grades kindergarten through six, seven and nine.

2. Parents of students in the four affected schools should check the district's website throughout the day today for information about the start of school. Council Rock officials said Monday evening that PECO expects power to be restored by the end of today.

3. Some areas in Newtown and Wrightstown Township remain without power. In addition to Wrightstown Elementary School, The library opened Monday but patrons could only check out books with a library card. If you plan to go to the library today, be sure to call ahead and find out what resources are available.

4. It will be nice weather for the first day back to school. The forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 80s.
