Essential information about the day ahead in Newtown

1. In case you didn't notice, it's now officially spring! Yesterday, March 20, was the first day of the spring solstice. While the upcoming forecast looks like we're still in store for some chilly weather, it's just a matter of time before we can expect consistent mild temperatures, flowers, and plenty of sunshine.

2. The monthly meeting of the Newtown Historic Association will be held tonight and it will feature a presentation on the Bryn Athyn railroad disaster by the Southampton Railroad Station Society. In the winter of 1921, a passenger train wreck occurred on the Newtown Line, killing a few Newtown residents and injuring many others. The public is invited and refreshments will be served. 3. A meeting for parents of students on the Council Rock North boys soccer team will be held at the school tonight starting at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at Cafeteria East.

4. Speaking of high school sports, team portraits for Council Rock North spring sport athletes will be held this afternoon.

5. Registration is now open for Newtown Township Parks and Recreation's Youth Flag Football League. Children 7 to 14 years old can play in the league, which will be split up into four age groups.
