5 Things You Need to Know Today: May 12

Essential information about the day ahead in Newtown.

1. Transcend Fitness is holding a free Zumba Jam today from 6 to 8 p.m. Four of the club's most popular instructors will host the Jam, and there will complimentary snacks and drinks. The event kicks off the club's expanded Zumba program. The Jam is open to the public. For more information, visit www.TranscendFit.net.

2. There's a Brewery Promo Night at tonight from from 7 to 9 p.m. featuring 21st Amendment Brewery. Kegs of several of 21st Amendment’s most popular beers will be tapped, including Monk’s Blood Belgian Dark Ale (8.3%), Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Beer (4.9%), and Bitter American Session Ale (4.4%). Bob Gera from the Global Brewers Guild will be at the event to talk about the brewery and provide some samples from their portfolio. At the end of the night, there will be a raffle for a growler filled with 21st Amendment beer.

3. The Bucks County Community College Book Discussion Group meets tonight at 7:30 p.m.. The free, informal gatherings take place on the second Thursday of the month during the academic year on the college’s Newtown campus. This month, the group will discuss My Name is Red by Olmar Panuk. The final title to be discussed this spring is Room by Emma Donahue on June 9. At the June meeting, attendees will suggest and choose titles for September through December.

4. The Newtown Exchange Club has its May dinner tonight from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the , 400 Freedom Drive. The Newtown Exchange Club is an organization that raises money for child abuse prevention and underprivileged children.

5. The Bucks County Community College Jazz Orchestra will perform tonight at 7:30 p.m. Under the direction of Jeff Baumeister, the Jazz Orchestra will perform a diverse repertoire featuring the music of jazz legend Thad Jones.
