Area Hit With Rare October Snow

According to the National Weather Service, the last time measurable snow fell in October in the Philadelphia area was on October 10, 1979. That day, two inches fell.

We should be carving pumpkins but instead tomorrow we may be carving a pathway through the snow.

The snowfall has started and forecasters say to expect between three and five inches of snow today and through the night.

Snow in Bucks County in October is rare, meteorologists say.

Here's the National Weather Service forecast for the next 24 hours:

Today: Rain and snow before 1 p.m., then rain between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., then rain and snow after 2 p.m. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 41. Northeast wind around 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Tonight: Snow, mainly before midnight. Low around 30. North wind between 15 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 44. Northwest wind between 11 and 13 mph.
