Audubon To Host Backyard Training Program For Residents

The one-day program will serve as a "roadmap to backyard design and stewardship" according to Audubon.

 

Audubon Pennsylvania is collaborating with four area municipalities, including Newtown Township, to present a Backyard Training program for residents that it says will serve as a “roadmap to backyard design and stewardship.” 

The one-day program, to be held Saturday, March 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Doylestown Township Activity Center, is being offered in conjunction with area Bird Town participants. . Doylestown, Lower Makefield and Penndel followed.

The Bird Town program was developed in 2010 by Audubon Pennsylvania to help communities improve their ecology and create a more sustainable environment for both wildlife and residents.  The program encourages and aids communities to utilize better land management practices and stewardship with the goal of achieving a range of environmental benefits. 

According to organizers, any homeowner, gardener or teacher who is interested in helping the environment can attend the training, which will explore restoring backyard ecology.

Attendees will learn: 

  • How to assess properties using Google Earth and other tools
  • How to use the 15-step design process to implement change
  • About native plants and how to create curb appeal
  • How sustainable landscaping can help you and others save money
  • To identify 10 to 15 birds and what they need in a backyard to thrive 

The cost to attend is $55 and includes a textbook, notebook and intensive course, plus light morning refreshments and lunch.
