Wow, 364 Lbs of Food Collected for Penndel Pantry

Newtown Borough merchants held the food drive in conjunction with First Saturday, a monthly event on State Street that features sidewalk sales and specials.

A food drive Saturday in Newtown Borough generated 364 pounds of food for the Penndel Food Pantry. 

Newtown Borough merchants held the food drive in conjunction with First Saturday, a monthly event on State Street that features sidewalk sales and specials.

Becky Betz, of Becky’s Newtown Deli, told Patch the donations filled the back of a pickup truck. Merchants collected various food items, including canned meats and fruit, juice, baking products (flour, sugar, oils), condiments and beans.

Additionally, nearly $170 was raised for the food pantry. A resident who learned of the food drive donated $104—all of the proceeds from her yard sale that day.

Betz told Patch that workers from the Penndel Food Pantry, operated by the Bucks County Housing Group, were thankful and appreciative to Newtown business owners, customers and residents for their participation.
