Newtown Borough Tree Lighting is Tonight

The annual Christmas tree lighting takes place this evening at the Newtown Firehouse on Liberty Street.

The borough's annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony will be held this evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Newtown Firehouse on Liberty Street. After the tree is lit, the Santa House will open. Children can meet Santa and have their picture taken.

Santa will also be accepting visitors this Sunday after the holiday parade (which gets underway at 2 p.m.) until 4 p.m. Other Santa House hours are: Dec 8, 9, 15 and 16 from 2 until 4 p.m.

This will be the tenth year Santa welcomes Newtown's kids to share their holiday wishes. In 2003, a group of Newtown Borough businesses arranged for the Santa House to be built by a carpentry class at the Middle Bucks Institute of Technology.

There is no charge to meet Santa, however donations are accepted. Families should bring their cameras.

After the tree lighting, there will be a First Night fundraiser from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at The Temperance House. The cost is $20, which includes food and entertainment. The entertainment will be acts from this year's First Night Newtown -- the annual New Year's Eve celebration.
