Community Wellness Day is Today

The event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at Newtown Elementary School and will feature a variety of wellness services, including health assessments, screenings and car seat safety checks.

The free event is one of many being held in cities across the nation this fall. The goal is to expose residents to local wellness services that can help them stay healthy and safe, organizers said.

Free services include car seat safety checks, computerized health assessments and screenings for blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol. Educational resources will be provided by groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics, AARP, NY Life and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

There will also be samples of healthy foods from local restaurants like Jules Thin Crust, free massage stations, Zumba classes and weight loss programs.  The day will also feature fun for the kids, including face painting, pumpkin painting and a moon bounce.

Pedals for Progress, a New Jersey-based nonprofit organization, w The drive is being coordinated by the Newtown Rotary Club.

Pedals for Progress works to help residents of developing countries achieve independence by giving them access to bikes. The organization collects used bicycles and ships them overseas to countries like Nicaragua, Ghana and Vietnam.  The organization will also be collecting sewing machines to donate to developing countries.

Bikes of all types can be dropped off at the drive, which will be held through the duration of the event. A $10 donation to offset the cost of shipping is requested.

Community Wellness Day will feature raffles, too. State Representative Steve Santarsiero has donated a prize for the Community Wellness Day raffle: a trip to Harrisburg, which includes a tour of the State House. Other raffle prizes will include Trenton Thunder baseball tickets and gift cards to the Green Parrot, Marisa Boutique and Metro.

All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Kelly Anne Dolan Memorial Fund, a non-medical resource center that provides advocacy, education, and financial assistance to families in the tri-state area who are caring for seriously ill, disabled or injured children.
