Full House at Stocking Works II Presentation

More than 75 people came out Tuesday night to learn about a mixed-use development proposed for the old Stockburger site.

It was standing room only at the Borough Council meeting tonight, as dozens of people turned out to learn more about a proposed mixed-use development at the former Stockburger Chevrolet property on South State Street.

Developer Allan Smith, along with architect J. Robert Hillier, presented a sketch plan detailing what many called a "visionary" concept to improve nine acres on the west part of town.

The concept plan, which is in sketch form only and has not been formally submitted to the borough, includes features like retail, residential, dining, public gathering spaces, and a parking garage.

Smith said he has not finalized exactly how many residential units he plans to construct, and said he seeking input from Council.

No vote was taken on the proposal, as it is in sketch form only. If and when Smith submits formal plans to the borough, an approval process that would include input from Council, the Planning Commission, and the public would ensue.

However, Smith's Tuesday evening presentation was intended to provide an early opportunity for Council and residents to weigh in.

Borough Council members had mixed feelings about the project. Council President Julia Woldorf and Councilman Mike Sellers said they believe the project is visionary.

Audience members had mixed feelings, too. Many wholeheartedly support the proposal and say it will add a much-needed boost to that part of town. Others had concerns about the density of the project, the amount of residential units, and the resulting traffic and parking issues.
