Newtown Preparing for Welcome Day

The annual street fair is Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sycamore Street.

Newtown Welcome Day is Sunday and it looks like the next dose of rain will hold off until that night, according to forecasters. As of Friday night, forecasters were calling for a 30 percent chance of afternoon showers on Sunday and temperatures in the high 60s.

The annual street fair, hosted by the Newtown Business and Professional Association, will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sycamore Street. It will feature music, food, arts and crafts, prizes, games, and “Kids Fun Zones” complete with a flight simulator.

New this year is the Rising Star competition, which will feature former American Idol hopeful Devyn Rush as a judge. To read more about that competition, check out

The kids will find plenty to do at Welcome Day, where there will be a moon bounce, face painting, games, giveaways, and more.

There will be several live entertainment acts, including the Greater Kensington String Band, folk bluegrass by Faith and Practice, kid’s music by Meg Russell, and contemporary pop/rock music by Zack Goebbel. Action Karate and Newtown Athletic Club students will be doing both karate and tae kwon do demonstrations.

Adults can enter the NBPA’s “Passport Challenge” to win prizes, including an Apple iPad. Participants will need to locate certain event sponsors who have a yellow balloon at their table.
