Observe Memorial Day in Newtown

Monday, May 27 is the time to honor our patriots and welcome the summer.

Memorial Day is a time to commemorate those who have fallen in service to the United States.

The official celebration of these heroes began in the 1860s after the Civil War, when wreaths were laid on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The practice was fully recognized throughout the existing states by 1890.

So, what is the best way to honor the holiday?

In Newtown, you can grab your folding chair and flag and attend the local parade.

The parade, organized by American Legion Post 440, will start at the Commons West Building on Newtown-Yardley Road. The parade will turn into the Newtown Cemetery for a graveside memorial service to Morell Smith at 8:30 a.m.

Around 9 a.m., the parade will go down Washington Avenue to Lincoln Avenue to Centre Street, where it will pause for memorial services at the Word War I monument in front of the Newtown Library.

From the library, the parade will go right onto Congress Street to Jefferson and make a left onto State Street to Borough Hall, where there will be a memorial service and speeches.

This year's Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshall is Dave Callahan, a member of the Morell Smith Post of the American Legion and the long-time owner of the Newtown Hardware House.

Remember, should you decide to hang a flag on Memorial Day, it should never touch the ground and it should be flown at half-mast until noon.
