October Snow Causes Power Outages, Treacherous Roads

An unseasonable snowfall dumped four inches on the Newtown area by early Saturday evening. The National Weather Service estimates as much as ten inches would fall by early Sunday.

A historic October snowstorm caused widespread power outages and created unsafe driving conditions in Newtown on Saturday.

About four inches of snow had blanketed the Newtown area by early Saturday evening. The National Weather Service estimated as much as 10 inches could fall on the region by early Sunday.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 2 a.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, the heavy, wet snow will likely weigh down trees, some of which still have leaves left on them. “This will lead to downed trees and power outages,” according to the National Weather Service.

Area roads were slick and plows were busy throughout the day Saturday. A downed tree on State Street in Newtown Borough closed a portion of the main thoroughfare.

It was also windy, with gusts up to 30 miles per hour. Temperatures hovered in the mid 30s throughout the day Saturday.

The snow caught most people by surprise. Snow in Bucks County in October is extremely rare, meteorologists say.

According to the National Weather Service, the last time measurable snow fell in October in the Philadelphia area was on October 10, 1979. That day, two inches fell.

The snow should be through by daybreak Sunday. Here's tomorrow's forecast, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 42. North wind between 9 and 15 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 28. Light north wind.
