Parks and Recreation Releases New Catalog

The township is offering classes for adults and children in everything from origami to cooking, athletics and more

The Parks and Recreation has released its Winter/Spring 2011 catalog and there’s certainly no shortage of activities to keep you and your family busy for the coming months.

For children, the township has everything from tea parties to pony clubs. Here are some program highlights:

  • Belle’s Valentine’s Tea Party For children ages 2 and older, Belle’s tea party will feature stories, dancing, treats and more. The party will be held Sat., Feb. 12 at the township building.
  • Music for Mom and Me Bring your child (18 months to 3 years) for a hands-on music class that focuses on movement, clapping, rocking, and marching. There are multiple class times and sessions for this popular class, which is held at the township building.
  • Mommy and Me Pony Club Got a little equestrian on your hands? Then the Mommy and Me Pony Club is for you. This club is an introduction to the world of horses and will teach your child the fun of grooming, handing, and riding horses. This class also has numerous sessions and times. It is held at Painted Dreams Farm in Wrightstown Township.
  • Holiday Origami This class will teach children ages 6 to 11 how to make decorative origami. The class on Feb. 12 will focus on Valentine’s Day themes. Later sessions will focus on traditional origami and spring-themed origami. The class is at the municipal building.
  • Cartooning Children ages 8 to 14 will learn the unique drawing style of cartoons in this six-session art class. The class, held in the Martindell House, will teach children how to draw expressions, convey moods, and develop humor in their artwork. There will be three sessions, one beginning in February, another in April, and a third starting in June. Classes are held Saturdays.
  • Israeli Dance Instructor Darcy Silvers will lead children ages 16 and older in this beginners Israeli dance class. Students will learn basic steps, as well as partner dances, translations of song titles and a short history of this cultural dance.

For adults, there’s floral design, cooking, yoga, and more. Here are some program highlights for adults:

  • Boating for Beginners This class is an introduction to boating. Upon completion of the class, participants will earn the PA certification needed to operate a boat. This one-session class is held all day on Sat., April 9 at the township building.
  • Chinese Cooking Love Chinese food but get tired of the takeout bills? This class will teach you how to make your favorite Chinese dishes, including spring rolls, dumplings, and more. The Chinese cooking class is one evening and there are two sessions: Feb. 16 and April 13. Both are from 6 to 8 p.m. at Council Rock High School North.
  • Do-it-Yourself Floral Design Learn how to make centerpieces, corsages, boutonnieres, bouquets, and more at this class, which is for beginners to experienced floral designers. There are a variety of floral design classes, including one that focuses solely on bouquets, and another on centerpieces. Participants can take one or all of the classes, which are held at Green Orchard Design Studio in Newtown.
  • Introduction to Riding If you’ve always wanted to learn how to ride a horse but never had the chance, now is the time. The township’s introduction to riding will teach adults the basics of riding. Classes are held at Painted Dreams Farm.
  • Yoga If you’re looking for an exercise that blends stretching and breathing techniques, then try out yoga. The township is offering a seven-week yoga class taught by Jim Whitmoyer. The classes are held Wednesday evenings at the township building. There are several sessions, including one that begins this week.
