Plans Shaping Up For July 4 Celebration

The First Fourth Committee has announced there will be a parade, fireworks, and party on July 2. But they're looking for some help.

Plans for a festive Fourth of July weekend in Newtown are in the works and organizers are looking for support – in the form of both monetary donations and manpower.

The First Fourth celebration will feature a parade, party, and fireworks on Saturday, July 2.

However, there has been a shift from the initial plan: the block party, which was originally set for Sycamore Street by Goodnoe’s Corner, will be held at Newtown Middle School. The fireworks show will also be at Newtown Middle School later that day.

“Everything is pretty much going to be at the Middle School with the exception of the parade,” said First Fourth planning committee chairman Joe Gordon.  The parade will start at 3 p.m. near Old St. Andrew’s Church and go down Sycamore Street to the Green Parrot.

Parade participants should be there between 2 and 2:30 p.m. so they can be lined up, Gordon said, adding the parade will include antique vehicles, fire trucks, re-enactors, and more.

After the parade, the festivities will continue at Newtown Middle School, where a block party will begin at 4 p.m. There will be bands, a disc jockey, food, and more.

The bike-decorating contest will be held and a township vs. borough softball game will kick off after the parade as well.

The fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. that evening. Parking for the fireworks is $5. Proceeds from the fee benefit the Civil Air Patrol Squadron 101 based out of Lower Bucks County, which is helping to direct parking.  Fireworks parking will be at Council Rock High School North.

Gordon said the First Fourth committee is still seeking local businesses to sponsor the festivities. A $500 donation will enable businesses to have a banner in the parade as well as up at the fireworks. Plus, sponsoring businesses will get two VIP passes to the fireworks, Gordon explained.

The total cost for the day’s festivities is $6,000, according to Gordon.  The fireworks alone are $3,500.

Another way to help is by volunteering to set up that day. Gordon said the planning committee is seeking people to help set up at the Middle School. If you are interested in helping, contact Marlowe Gordon at Marne136gordon@gmail.com.
