A portion of Sycamore Street was closed Monday and Tuesday as PECO crews worked to repair a gas leak.  Sycamore Street was closed between Richboro Road and Cambridge Lane.

Newtown Borough Council held a roundtable meeting with local business owners Wednesday. Council scheduled the roundtable to learn more about what it could do to aid State Street shop owners in these challenging economic times. More than 25 people packed into Council Chambers to be part of the discussion, which touched on parking, signage, marketing and cooperation among business owners.

McGrath Homes, which has plans to redevelop the old Acme site on Sycamore Street, will come before the Newtown Township Board of Supervisors later this month to discuss revisions to the plans. The property, to be called "The Promenade," has been sitting idle for years, causing frustration among residents and business owners.

The execution date for Robert Anthony Flor, who shot and killed Newtown Borough Police Officer Brian Gregg, has been set for Sept. 29. Governor Tom Corbett on Wednesday signed the execution warrant for Flor, who was sentenced to death for killing Gregg. He will be executed by lethal injection, according to information from the Governor’s office.

Newtown Township Police Department announced this week they would staff additional offers on Sunday after they received information that Westboro Baptist Church, the Kansas-based church known for protesting homosexuality at military funerals, may picket outside St. Andrew’s Catholic Church during a service for Sergeant First Class Kenneth B. Elwell. Elwell, a Northampton Township resident and graduate of Council Rock High School North, died in Afghanistan last month.
