Week in Review: Skate Park Closed, Council Rock to Trim Staff

Newtown Township temporarily closed its skate park due to noise issues. Council Rock School District is considering eliminating 62 staff positions to meet budget.

It was a busy week in Newtown. The Newtown Township supervisors met Wednesday and continued to discuss the issue of noise at the skate park that has been a point of contention for some Tyler Walk residents. Also this week, the Council Rock School District administration began to give specifics on how it will pare down the budget.

Here's our recap of the last week in Newtown (March 21 through 25):

Monday: The push to stop a McDonald's from coming to Newtown is continuing in full force. Residents opposed to the fast food restaurant planting its arches in town announced earlier this week that they've scheduled a community meeting on April 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the . The meeting will be a chance for residents to discuss the next steps in their effort to prevent a McDonald’s restaurant from being built at the Office Place East site in Village at Newtown East.

Tuesday: On Tuesday, Newtown Patch reported that the Bucks County Wine Trail Spring Tour has been scheduled for May 15 from noon until 5 p.m. Locally, in Newtown and in Washington Crossing are participating in the tour, as well as seven other Bucks County wineries.

Wednesday: Newtown Township officials announced Wednesday that the skate park has been temporarily closed due to noise complaints from residents of the Tyler Walk community. The skate park, located off the Newtown Bypass behind , opened in October but recent complaints of excessive noise have prompted the township to shut it down until the issue can be resolved.

Thursday: At a district Finance Committee meeting Thursday, Council Rock School District Superintendent Mark Klein presented details of $11.2 million in proposed cuts, which include the elimination of 62 staff positions. The district is facing a $14.2 million budget deficit due to state aid cuts and reductions in revenue, officials explained.

Friday: Newtown Township police reported Friday that there have been numerous overnight thefts from parked cars. Police said residents of Yorkshire Drive, Burgundy Lane, Sutton Court, and Devon Court this week reported that items had been stolen from their unlocked vehicles overnight.
