Women's Self Defense Symposium To Be Held This Weekend

The Association for Women's Self Defense Advancement is holding a training symposium this weekend at the Newtown Athletic Club.

The Association for Women’s Self Defense Advancement is holding its annual training symposium this weekend at the .

The three-day event will feature self-defense workshops, instructor training programs, an evening networking event and a gun education session. The gun education portion, which is Sunday, will be held at Wicens Shooting Range in Furlong.

On Friday from 1 to 8 p.m. instructor certification classes will be offered. Preregistration is required and the cost is $175. On Saturday, the symposium will offer all-day training workshops from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $75.

Following the workshops, there will be an evening networking event with dinner, raffles and guest speaker Debbie Puglisi Sharp, an inspirational speaker and author who is a victim of violence.  In 1998, an intruder shot Sharp’s husband and brutally attacked and raped her for 101 hours before she escaped.

Her book, “Shattered:  Reclaiming A Life Torn Apart By Violence,” tells the story of her experience during this traumatic ordeal. She has appeared on Oprah, 20/20, Montel, The John Walsh Show, A&E Biography and Discovery Health.
