Moms Talk Q&A: Kids and (Airsoft) Guns

The spring weather means kids are spending more time outside. Some are doing that with Airsoft guns.

Welcome back to Moms Talk, where each week, our Moms Council of experts and smart parents take your questions, give advice and share solutions.

Moms, dads, grandparents and the diverse families who make up our community have a new resource for questions about local neighborhood schools, the best pediatricians, 24-hour pharmacies and the thousands of other issues that arise while raising children.

Moms Talk is also the place to drop in to talk about the latest parenting hot topic. Do you know of local moms raising their children in the "Tiger Mother's" way and is it the best way? Where can we get information on local flu shot clinics for children? How do we talk to our children about the Tucson shootings? How can we help our children's schools weather their budget cutbacks?

If you have a question that you want to discuss here, just drop us an e-mail.

So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with a question from a Bensalem-area mom:

The weather got nice and I see more kids outside. Some of them are running around with these Airsoft guns. Are they safe?

I am a regular air softer at the age of 15. I play at my cousins house mainly because there is no other place to play. For those looking to see what the game is about its simply an adrenaline sport. Eye protection is the only protection needed for the sport rather than discipline and honesty. It is a sport just like the more popular game of paintball. The warnings on the guns and boxes are simply there for protection and to prevent underage purchases. Parents please don't restrain the kids if they have a love or simply an interest in the sport. Unfortunately I found out about this game in a neighborhood fight. ( one kid didn't like me so he shot me with what looked liked a real gun. For those who want to ensure that there is no doubt between a real gun and air soft firearm there is a 6mm orange tip at the end of every gun and some guns are even made of clear plastic. No death has ever been reported directly relating to an air soft gun. The injuries that due happen in the sport are related to careless use and misuse of the guns. The main risk of the game is the lack of eye protection. Make sure all children have goggles masks or at least shatterproof glasses. With these simple but ever so important items can the game remain safe. Please enforce these rules upon yours and any other kids that play. Glad to be of help :) keep the sport safe!!!

Actually, Airsofting is becoming an increasingly popular sport to play! As long as you are properly educated I think it is a great athletic sport that could be safely played! I personally learned everything I know from Airsplat.com!! In my opinion they are the best company for airsoft guns around! Not only do they have explanatory Youtube videos specifically on gun safety (http://www.airsplat.com/airsoft-safety.htm) but they also have safety bundles Airsoft Half Face Protection Bundle Kit Item Code: AC-APP-HALFFACE Airsoft Gun Style: Airsoft Face Lower Mask Goggle Glasses Manufacturer: TAG (Tactical Airsoft Gear) Airsoft Full Face Player Protection Bundle Kit - Valken Pyramex Highlander Airsoft Goggle: Regular price $29.99 - ZAN Headgear Balaclava Face Mask BLK: Regular price $6.99 - BRAVO Tac Gear Metal Mesh Half Mask BLK: Regular price $14.99 - Valken V-TAC Full Finger Gloves Large: Regular price $8.99 - Tactical Airsoft Elbow & Knee Pads BLK: Regular price $14.99 Airsoft Half Face Protection Bundle Kit Price: $72.99 per EACH If you just find more information about the safety I hope you can change how you view Airsoft guns, and remember its not that gun that harms people, its the person pulling the trigger!!
