Borough Police Getting New Car

The current car has been hit twice and has a bad anti-lock breaking system as well as electrical problems, Mayor Dennis O'Brien said.

Newtown Borough police will have a new set of wheels on the road in the near future.

Borough Council on Wednesday approved the purchase of a new Dodge Charger to replace the department’s 2008 Crown Victoria. The purchase, which is a budgeted item in the t, is not to exceed $24,500 including the build out with sirens and lights.

Mayor Dennis O’Brien explained that Ford no longer makes the Crown Victoria, so it will get increasingly difficult to obtain parts.  The current car has been hit twice and has a bad anti-lock breaking system as well as electrical problems, he added.

The department’s Crown Victoria has a trade-in value of $5,000, O’Brien said. The borough may be able to get more if it finds a buyer on its own.

The cost of the new Dodge Charger is $23,900. It comes with a 100,000-mile power train warranty, O’Brien noted.

Council supported the measure unanimously. “This car is the car of choice from all over the country. We’ve checked around and it’s highly rated,” Council President Bob Walker said.
